Buying $500 in ammo gets the cops called on you???

WEll it happened here last night. A guy simply bought $500 in ammo from the local Meijers(Wal-Mart competitor), and as soon as he left, the manager called police to report "suspicious" activity because the manager had never had that much purchased at one time.

I think it is sad that $500 can get you labeled as suspicious, even considering the machine gun shoot was just ending in the same town. Obviously, it wouldn't go anywhere even if the cops show up, but is this manager really out of the loop that much? I mean, that's only a case of .223 or so....

Anybody else getting the feeling that this whole situation is about to reach critical mass very soon??

I don't see how recent events can ever really de-escalate and be diffused without some serious shit going down first...

Because of stories like this I am now more willing to spend the extra $1 or $2 a box and buy at gun stores. I think this is going to become very common soon.

Interesting to watch the society-wide progression from things being "unusual" to "suspicious" to "illegal."

There was an interesting sign hanging at my range this weekend, it went something like this: "Limit 2 boxes of 9mm ammo per customer. All ammo must be fired on the range prior to leaving".

It's bad enough they limit you to 2 boxes, but you can't even take it home for a rainy day?! So with that, I'll buy as much as I can, where ever I can. :ok:

I have to imagine this kind of behavior has to hit their profit margins. Who would want to shop at a place that calls the cops on you for legally buying their products?

In regards to the thread title, I know I at least bought over $700 in ammo, paid in cash without any problems, but it was a local gun store.

I always laugh out loud when you see a media report or something referencing HUGE amounts of ammunition confiscated during the raid. Then they say something like "1000 rounds, multiple weapons, or several boxes"

I think most everyone here has at least that much in all calibers sitting in their possession, and probably more than that. Why heck some even have ammo for stuff they might one day own.

Yeppers. Just bought some .380 and have put away some 9mm just in case. Figure even if I don't deversify my guns I might be able to help someone else out someday.

Yeah. I caught a news blurb on the television at the sandwich shop where I ate lunch. It was running a tally of the number of shooting victims killed in rampages in the last few weeks. It was 57 people, I think. This was followed closely by asking viewers to participate in a phone-in survey, the survey question being "is it time for more restrictions on gun ownership."

What i can see happerning in that regard, is like when i lived in Illinois about 20 yrs ago, we had
"foid" cards, a differant one for each gun you owned, you had to show it to buy ammo. if the card was for a 30-06, then thats all theyd sell. Im sure the feds will try this

For some they would have to have a "deck of cards" when they went to purchase ammo. Did they allow you to pick a wild card? If you had a weapon that would accept multiple calibers, was it like, "one eyed jacks are good for the caliber of your choice"?

Yeah? Are they going to restrain you when you leave? I would like to see the statute making it legal for merchants to restrain customers from leaving a store with a legally purchased product. I love the smell of lawsuits in the morning. You can put up a sign saying anything.

Way to generalize. It's not about men or women. It's about stupid people.
And most men are not pu$$ies. However, i can see if you were to watch TV you would think that. Our whole society has gone soft from that of say the pioneer days. We've had it too good. This includes both men and women.

Yes the manager is a moron but the buyer should know better. Did he really think he could go into a store like Wal-Mart, buy $500 worth of ammunition, and think nothing like that will happen? Buy your bulk at a gun show where everyone is doing that same thing. Buy a few boxes here and there at your Wal-Marts, Dick's, Cabela's, etc. The nail that sticks out will get hammered down.

Imagine, if you can, the amount of heat that store manager would have felt, had the buyer then raced over and open fired on a school playground during recess.

That's a lot of ammo, for a one time purchase. I've been shooting for years, and have won a lot of competitions, and rarely do I shoot more then a 100 rounds per range visit.

Sorry, but that's a news media/PC touchy-feely "feel good" approach/excuse. If I wanted to "open fire on a school playground during recess" (I do not, by the way - recess should be FUN), it certainly would NOT require $500 worth of ammo. $10-$30 of ammo would certainly do the job adequately (even less, if you stuck with .22LR).

The store manager had no freakin' business whining to the cops about "the baaaaaad man" buying $500 worth of ammo. Does he go whining to the cops if the baaaaaad man buys a half dozen cans of engine starting fluid, or half a dozen plastic fuel containers, or a bunch of propane canisters? Not likely.

What if the baaaaad man buys some pool cleaning chemicals, pesticides, or just some "safe" Confectioner's Sugar?

No excuse.

But that doesnt make any sense........

You are grabbing at straws on that one......

This is a manager who must have had his head up his @$$ since November of last year or he just loves to snitch.

He deserves a beatdown just a warmup.

MIND YOUR OWN BUISINESS.......AND IF THE STATE DIDNT RIDE OUR @$$E$ LIKE THEY DO A PURCHASE LIKE THAT WOULDNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE BECAUSE EACH HOME WOULD BE WELL ARMED TO TAKE CARE OF ANY NUT WITH A DEATHWISH.

If you have done any reading in the last 10+ years, guys that go on a shooting rampage don't take 3 boxes of ammo. They take 3 crates, and every piece of weaponry they own. They go to make a last stand, to take on the entire population of police and sheriffs from all nearby counties.

I suppose some psycopaths are different and more frugal in mass murdering expenditures. I personally don't know any, frugal or otherwise. :signs14:

What kind of competitions are you winning that require that little shooting? Even our local weekly IDPA matches have higher round count than that. Besides, do you really want to have to go to the store to buy ammo every time you want to go shooting?

The F*****G Patriot Act requires all bank and other financial institution employees to report "suspicious activity", at each employee's personal discretion. Things like unusually large cash deposits or cash withdrawals, even stuff bwell below $10,000. They see something fishy, or if they just don't like the color of your shirt, bank employees are required to report you!

Concerning guns and ammo, retail store clerks won't be far behind. Basically, you buy a gun or a box of ammo, and you are therefor, by definition, suspicious, and they will be required to report you.

I learned and competed with the Marines pistol shooting team out of Parris Island. We dry snapped 50 times for every round fired down range. Ammo was free.

After I left the Corps, I reloaded. Supplies were bought in bulk. Back then I could get 500 wad cutters of 45ACP for less then $15.

I guess I've just not read anything for the past 10+ years, being the sheltered, innocent, naive, kind soul that I am.

I believe that many people going on "rampages" bring a weapon or two, a handful of magazines ("clips", per the media), and maybe a few boxes of ammo. Most mass shooters do not bring crates & crates of ammo. That's bulky, heavy, and hurts your shoulders when you try & lug it around in your black "tacticool" backpack. Only the shelter-in-place "come & get me" folks take that approach.

It unfortunately doesn't take much to garner media attention. All it takes is the proper "spin" on a news event, maybe a firearm & a few people hurt in the process. Pick the proper buzzwords, such as "intense gun toting loner", and Bob's Yer Unkle - you've got all the sheeple anxiously awaiting every word coming out of the manna-box (TV).

It's possible that your range is having trouble getting ammo just like nearly every place else and, in the interest of being able to sell to customers who want to shoot at their range, are limiting purchases. If people come in, buy two boxes, shoot one and leave, that defeats their goal of keeping stock for people who come to shoot it at the range.

Just guessing. But I can't imagine why else a gun range, of all places, would try to restrict ammo purchases.

Takes about a half an hour if that... that's if you have a cup of coffee. I've been known to shoot a few hundred in a morning. Different guns, different distances, different targets. If I have a 22 with me, I may send out a hundred of those before beginning any serious shooting.

This guy had every right to buy 500 bucks worth of ammo. The manager should be policing the aisles for "wet clean up" rather than harassing customers.

I suppose you'd recommend the cops be called for excessive toilet paper buying as well? Hell, I've never used more than a roll at a sitting, and that was only 'cause I had the drizzlies. No reason in the world anyone should be buying a case of the stuff. Highly suspicious.

Most of the guys that do that kind of stuff don't buy their guns or their ammo. They "borrow" it from someone in their family or from one of their friends.

Makes as much sense as the L.A. City Council banning ammo sales for the week prior to New Years some years ago. Because as we all know, anyone who shoots their gun on New Years Eve, buys the ammo to do so a day or two before the actual event. What a bunch of morons! I love topics like this, people tend to show their true colors.

I make it a point to NEVER buy more than $499 of ammo at any one time... that makes all the difference! And I never go to the same store more than twice a week!

Oh...?

You think so?

They're tracking YOUR every minute on the net as you read this!

Resistance is futile!

Just send me any gold or silver or guns or ammo you have... at least the Gubberment won't get it... right?

Get a UPS mailbox and have it delivered there........you want at least one point of disruption from you to the ammo dealer.

Not full proof by any means but at least you tried.

That is all we can do at this point.

I'm not sure if that would help much...

Most places that sell ammo online, require a copy of your D.L. to verify age and then only want to ship to the billing address...

Also, if you get a UPS or PO box, they want to know where you live... Si its just 5 more minutes for L.E. or whatever agency is looking for you...

Cabelas, Ammo to Go, Cheaper than Dirt ,Centerfire Systems to name a few will let you buy as much ammo with No proof as the day is long.

I dont deal with places that want a billable address on there Files........sorry Charlie I will happily pay 35 dollars or more to keep my privacy as I have no control as to what you do with my info after it leaves my hands, You can tell me anything

As for the Box.......like I said all we can do is try.........if nothing else your postman is droping it off at a non descript locale and wont know you from Adam which in light of the recent PM thefts is more than worth the price of Admission.

Just saying.
